Manjushree Khaitan, Birla Scion and Kesoram Chairperson, Passes Away

May 17, 2024

Manjushree Khaitan, the chairperson of Kesoram Industries and the younger daughter of group patriarch Basant Kumar Birla, passed away at Birla Park in Kolkata on Thursday after a prolonged illness. She was 69.

Legacy and Contributions

Khaitan joined the Kesoram board in October 1998 and became its chairperson after her father's death in July 2019. Before becoming the chairman, she was on the board of Kesoram for over two decades. Khaitan was also instrumental in bringing expatriate professionals to the board. She was closely involved in guiding Kesoram as well as its related entities.

Her association with the Ashok Hall Group of Schools spanned over four decades. The schools include Ashok Hall, G D Birla Centre for Education, Mahadevi Birla Shishu Vihar, and Little Step School. Her contribution to the cause of educating girls, especially those from less privileged backgrounds, was legendary.

Khaitan supported several artists through the Birla Academy of Fine Arts and was one of the pioneers in imbuing investment culture among school students. She used to bring the students of Ashok Hall to attend the annual general meeting of Kesoram Industries.

Family and Succession

Khaitan is survived by her son-in-law Anshuman Jalan and grandchildren. Her daughter Vidula Jalan passed away in May last year. Khaitan was the youngest among her siblings — brother Aditya Birla and sister Jayshree Mohta.

Khaitan’s nephew Kumar Mangalam Birla performed her last rites on Thursday night.
