Guarding Against Keyless Car Theft

Modern auto technology has made it more convenient to unlock and start vehicles, but it has also inadvertently facilitated a surge in car thefts. Thieves exploit wireless key fobs and push-button starters to steal cars in seconds.

The Vulnerability

Wireless key fobs emit a signal even when not in use. Thieves use portable equipment to pick up this faint signal from fobs inside homes or parking lots. They then relay it to a transmitter that can clone the signal, allowing them to steal the car.

Protective Measures

Here are some steps to safeguard your vehicle:

  • Use a Signal Blocker: Invest in a Faraday bag or pouch lined with a conductive metal mesh. Place your key fob inside to block electromagnetic signals. Test it by approaching your car; if the doors don't unlock automatically, the signal is blocked.
  • Old-Fashioned Lock: Consider using a physical steering wheel lock as an additional deterrent.

By taking these precautions, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to keyless car theft.
