The ICPC Holds Successful 2024 Plenary in Singapore

PORTSMOUTH, United Kingdom, May 16, 2024 — The International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC), the world’s leading organisation promoting submarine cable protection and resilience, recently held its annual Plenary session in Singapore with over 200 delegates from around the world under the theme ‘Ensuring a Connected Future.’

Global Attendance and Valuable Opportunities

The ICPC Plenary is a cornerstone event for the organisation, attracting global attendance. Delegates exchanged ideas on various aspects related to submarine cables, including planning, installation, operation, protection, maintenance, recovery, and recycling of out-of-service cables. The event provided valuable insights into environmental and legal considerations.

Keynote Speakers

Ambassador Rena Lee, President of the United Nations Intergovernmental Conference for the BBNJ negotiations, discussed the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) treaty and its progress. Ms Aileen Chia, Director-General, Telecoms and Post, at IMDA Singapore, shared insights on Singapore's digital connectivity blueprint, encompassing data centers and interconnecting networks overland and undersea.

Law of the Sea Workshop

The Plenary included a one-day law of the sea workshop jointly organised by the ICPC and the Centre for International Law of the National University of Singapore. Representatives from the submarine cable industry, academia, and government delegates from ASEAN countries discussed collaboration on laying, repair, protection, and security of submarine cables.

2025 Annual Event Announcement

At the conclusion of the Plenary, it was announced that the 2025 annual event will be held in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
