Advancements in Holographic AR Displays

Emerging spatial computing systems seamlessly superimpose digital information on the physical environment observed by users, enabling transformative experiences across various domains. However, the widespread adoption of augmented-reality (AR) displays has been limited due to bulky projection optics and challenges in portraying accurate three-dimensional (3D) depth cues for virtual content.

Unique Solution: Holographic AR System

We introduce a holographic AR system that overcomes these challenges using a combination of inverse-designed full-colour metasurface gratings, a compact dispersion-compensating waveguide geometry, and artificial-intelligence-driven holography algorithms. This co-designed system eliminates the need for bulky collimation optics and presents vibrant, full-colour, 3D AR content in a compact wearable device.

Unprecedented Visual Quality

To achieve unprecedented visual quality, we develop an innovative image formation model that combines a physically accurate waveguide model with learned components calibrated using camera feedback.

Compact Form Factor

Current waveguide designs are limited to displaying two-dimensional (2D) images at a fixed distance to the user. Our nanophotonic metasurface waveguide and AI-driven holographic algorithms represent a significant advancement in creating visually compelling 3D AR experiences in a compact wearable device.
