PGA Championship 2024: Avoiding Common Golf Swing Mistakes

May 15, 2024

LOUISVILLE— Top golfers make mistakes, too. Bad habits creep in, and pretty soon, the shots start going sideways. Ahead of the final practice round at the 2024 PGA Championship, two top players in the field were singing the same tune.

Fundamentals Matter

Ludvig Aberg, one of the contenders, emphasized the importance of fundamentals: "Most of my work revolves around the basics. If something feels off, it's likely due to my setup, grip, or ball position. Every player has unique tendencies, and I'm no exception."

Brooks Koepka's Insight

Defending champion Brooks Koepka shared his experience after a disappointing T-45 finish at the 2024 Masters: "I spent long hours on the range, focusing on fundamentals. That was the key."

The Common Mistake: Ball Position

Top coaches observe a recurring issue: golfers letting their ball position drift too far back in their stance. Koepka explained that windy conditions exacerbated this problem. When the ball position shifts back, it affects swing path and impact conditions, leading to missed shots to the right.

Butch Harmon advises proper ball positioning: middle of the stance for most wedges and short irons, progressively moving forward until it's off the left heel with the driver.

Remember, drifting too far back is an easy mistake, but with discipline, it's preventable.
