Australian surfing champion Mick Fanning has been struck by yet another tragedy with the passing of his third brother, Edward. This heartbreaking news follows the loss of Fanning’s elder brother, Peter, who died in his sleep from a health-related condition in 2015.

Edward Fanning: A Beloved Brother

Edward Fanning’s untimely death marks the third brother Mick Fanning has bid farewell to. His other brother, Sean, tragically lost his life in a car crash in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast back in 1998 when he was just 20 years old.

Edward, affectionately known as Eddie, was more than just a sibling to Mick. He was a mentor, a fellow wave rider, and a steadfast supporter. Mick fondly remembers Edward introducing him to the exhilarating world of surfing, igniting a passion that would shape his life.

A Bond Forged by Waves

“You taught me so much over the years about everything that life could deal up,” Mick shared on social media. “The good and the bad—you were my teacher. You introduced us all to surfing, the joy and freedom of riding a wave.”

Edward’s love for the ocean led him to what Mick describes as the “ultimate job”—teaching kids the art of riding waves. His infectious enthusiasm left an indelible mark on those he mentored.

A Farewell to Eddie

Edward was living and working at a surf tour camp in Madagascar when he passed away. His friend, Coolangatta bodyboarder Stevie Maher, expressed the depth of their friendship: “I enjoyed and had so many amazing times with you, Eddie. You were in my wedding party, we shared epic moments in Indo, and we were simply best mates. Now you rest in peace.”

Mick’s heartache is palpable, but he finds solace in memories of his brothers. In 2015, after Peter’s death, Mick shared, “Like all my big brothers, Peter will always be a hero to me. Tell the special people in your life you love them and give them a hug.”

Edward’s legacy lives on in the waves, the laughter, and the bond of brotherhood.
