How to Check Yourself for Cancer Signs: A Crucial Reminder

Almost half of the nation's women remain unaware when it comes to self-examining, according to a recent study. Dr. Mariyam Malik, a top doctor, emphasizes the importance of regular self-checks for early detection of potential health issues.

Why Self-Examination Matters

With new research revealing that almost half of women in the UK lack confidence in self-examination, Dr. Malik stresses the significance of a monthly self-check, also known as 'feel it on the first'.

The survey conducted by Pall Mall Medical further highlights concerning statistics: nine per cent of women admit they've never performed a self-examination, and nearly half have never undergone a smear test.

Dr. Malik's Urgent Message

Dr. Malik finds these results distressing, especially considering most women's lack of awareness about checking their bodies regularly for any changes. She urges:

"The results of our research have been quite alarming to me as a medical professional, particularly the findings about women's awareness of checking their own bodies for abnormalities and changes. I encourage all of my patients to check their bodies every single month. Put a reminder in your phone for the first of every month to 'Feel it on the First' and learn the key things to look out for when checking your body for potential signs of cancer."

Dr. Malik's Tips for Self-Examination

Breast Self-Examination

  • Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides.
  • Look for any changes in size, shape, or contour of your breasts, as well as any skin changes or dimpling.
  • Raise your arms and look for the same changes.
  • Lie down and use your opposite hand to feel each breast, checking for lumps, thickening, or any other abnormalities.

Pelvic Self-Examination

  • Use a mirror to inspect the vulva and vaginal area for any unusual lumps, sores, or changes in skin colour.
  • Check for any abnormal vaginal discharge, unusual bleeding, or pain during intercourse.
  • Note any changes in menstrual cycles or pelvic pain that persist beyond the usual menstrual cramps.

Skin Self-Examination

  • Pay attention to any changes in size, shape, colour, or texture of moles or skin lesions.
  • Use a mirror or ask a partner for help in examining areas that are hard to see, such as the back, scalp, and buttocks.
  • Don't forget to check the soles of your feet, between your toes, and under your nails.
