Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Aims for $45 Million Opening Weekend

Sony’s supernatural comedy sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is targeting a sizzling box office debut. Despite recent hits like Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 boosting theater attendance, overall revenues still lag behind 2023 levels by 10%. The latest installment in the beloved Ghostbusters franchise is poised to rake in $43 million to $45 million from 4,300 theaters across North America.

Paranormal Laughs and Cold Cash

The film follows in the ectoplasmic footsteps of its predecessor, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which reinvigorated the series after a 30-year hiatus. That film, with a modest $75 million budget, eventually grossed $129.3 million in North America and $204 million worldwide. Now, Frozen Empire carries a $100 million price tag, necessitating a robust performance to justify its cost (since theaters retain roughly 50% of revenues).

Behind the Camera

Co-writer of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Gil Kenan, took the directorial reins for Frozen Empire, succeeding Jason Reitman.
