Former Papal Master of Ceremonies Appointed Caretaker of Raphoe Diocese

Gweedore-born priest, Monsignor Kevin Gillespie, has taken on the role of Diocesan Administrator for the Diocese of Raphoe. This appointment comes after the transfer of former bishop Alan McGuckian SJ to Down and Connor.

Background

Monsignor Gillespie, a native of Gaoth Dobhair, previously served as Master of Ceremonies in Rome to both the late Pope Benedict and the current Pontiff, Pope Francis. His responsibilities included leading the procession of cardinals into the Conclave in Rome’s Sistine Chapel, where Pope Francis was elected in 2013.

Transition of Leadership

Bishop McGuckian, who became Ireland’s first Jesuit bishop when appointed to Raphoe in 2017, has now taken up the position of bishop of Down and Connor. This move followed Bishop Noel Traenor's appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union.

Caretaker Role

The Diocesan Administrator, Monsignor Gillespie, assumes a caretaker role to ensure the basic administration of the diocese until a new bishop is appointed. Currently serving as Administrator of St Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny, he previously worked at the Congregation for Clergy in Rome.

Monsignor Gillespie will continue in this capacity until Pope Francis designates Bishop McGuckian’s successor.
