The Decision to Hang Up the Bike

Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, Dame Laura Kenny, has decided to retire from track cycling. The five-time Olympic gold medallist had been eyeing Paris 2024, but she believes now is the right moment to bid farewell to her illustrious career.

“I have had an absolute blast, but now is the time for me to hang up that bike,” she told BBC. The sacrifices of leaving her children and family at home weighed heavily on her mind, and this significant decision was not taken lightly.

A Glittering Journey

Kenny’s journey to cycling greatness began early. At just 18, she secured her first European title in the team pursuit, followed by a world title in the same event a year later. The Olympic Games in London 2012 saw her storming to victory with two gold medals in the team pursuit and omnium. She repeated this feat four years later at Rio 2016.

After giving birth to her first son in 2017, Kenny displayed unwavering determination to return to peak form for the postponed Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021). She clinched silver in the team pursuit, but it was the women's Madison where she and Katie Archibald etched their names in history by claiming gold. They became the first Olympic champions in that event, with Kenny becoming Britain's most successful female Olympian and the first British woman to win golds at three consecutive Games.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Kenny expressed her gratitude to the British Cycling team, stating, “British Cycling has been my second family since 2010. I will miss riding my bike, but I will miss the staff members and my teammates more. From lunch with the mechanics to endless laps with the best teammates in the world: everyone at British Cycling, I thank you. We did this together.”

A Sporting Legend

Team Performance Director, Stephen Park CBE, believes that Laura Kenny will be remembered as one of the best sporting talents the country has ever produced.
