Smart Socks: A Step Forward in Diabetic Foot Prevention

By Jenny Corser | March 20, 2024

Diabetic foot ulcers pose a significant health risk for individuals with neuropathy. Our recent study delves into the development of smart-sensing socks designed to detect and prevent these ulcers caused by rubbing. In this blog post, we explore the challenges, insights, and potential impact of this innovative wearable technology.

The Sci-Fi Socks

At first glance, the concept of smart socks measuring rubbing in real time might seem like science fiction. Skepticism abounds—could such socks truly exist? While our prototype remains in development, we envision these "sci-fi socks" as perfectly calibrated to the wearer's unique needs.

Why Do I Need It?

Participants with diabetic neuropathy expressed doubts about the necessity of smart socks. Neuropathy, often associated with numbness, can be surprisingly uncomfortable. Moreover, different nerve types may not all be impacted equally. Some participants questioned whether rubbing posed a risk for them, underestimating their vulnerability to ulcers. Our findings highlight the importance of raising awareness and providing personalized risk evaluation.

How Do I Use It?

Understanding diabetic foot ulcers and prevention strategies remains limited. Participants, overwhelmed by busy lives, sometimes denied the urgency of daily prevention efforts. Clear, step-by-step instructions are crucial for effective use. The smart sock must guide wearers on when and how to respond to alerts, ensuring proactive care.

As we continue refining our smart-sensing sock, we recognize that patient context matters. By empowering individuals with real-time data, we aim to transform diabetic foot care and reduce the risk of amputation.
