Italy PM Giorgia Meloni Seeks Damages Over Deepfake Videos

Published on March 21, 2024, 9:29 am IST

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is taking legal action against the creators of deepfake pornographic videos featuring her. These manipulated videos, which superimposed her face onto another person's body, were disseminated online. The case highlights the growing menace of deepfakes and their impact on public figures.

The Deepfake Incident

Investigators allege that two individuals, a 40-year-old man and his 73-year-old father, produced and uploaded these illicit videos. The content surfaced on a pornographic website in the United States and garnered millions of views over several months. Notably, the deepfake video in question dates back to 2022, before Ms. Meloni assumed the role of Italy's Prime Minister.

Legal Pursuit

Ms. Meloni seeks €100,000 (approximately $109,345) in damages. While the request is symbolic, it underscores the gravity of the issue. Her legal team intends to donate the entire amount to support women who have been victims of male violence. Maria Giulia Marongiu, Ms. Meloni's lawyer, emphasizes that pressing charges against such abuses of power is essential.

Understanding Deepfakes

Deepfakes employ artificial intelligence to manipulate visual and audio content, often with malicious intent. These synthetic media pieces can convincingly depict fake events or statements. As deepfake technology advances, it poses a threat to public trust and truth. World leaders worldwide express concern about the proliferation of deepfakes and their potential impact on society.
