5 Maple Leafs Players Deserving Contract Extensions: Countdown

By Shane Seney

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has been busy lately, securing forward Bobby McMann with a two-year contract extension. While Auston Matthews and William Nylander received substantial extensions earlier this year, several questions remain unanswered.

Cap Space and Pending Free Agents

The Maple Leafs have a projected $20.5 million in cap space heading into the 2024-25 season, leaving room to consider re-signing pending unrestricted free agents. Here are five Maple Leafs players deserving of at least an extension offer before July 1, when free agency begins:

Ilya Samsonov

Despite a challenging season, Ilya Samsonov set career highs in various goaltending categories last year. His resilience and short memory make him an asset. While his save percentage remains low at .889, there's no need to overpay with Joseph Woll signed for next season and Denis Hildeby knocking at the door. A three-year extension around $4.5 million per season seems reasonable.

Tyler Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi, though initially facing challenges in Toronto, has become a solid secondary scoring option. With 31 points in 65 games, he's poised to elevate his game in the playoffs. His $5.5 million salary feels appropriate moving forward.

Joel Edmundson

On the blueline, Edmundson should receive a contract extension, while TJ Brodie may not. Restricted free agents Simon Benoit and Timothy Liljegren are likely to return, and Jake McCabe's $2 million contract provides stability.

Let's watch these players closely as the countdown to free agency continues.
